'American Idol' final audition episode in Oklahoma City recap

Zoanette Johnson makes it to Hollywood despite her caterwauling.

Carrie Underwood's home state of Oklahoma gets its first visit from "American Idol." But the producers did not highlight particularly good talent tonight. Instead, it was one inspiring back story and some goofy personalities including the incredibly annoying Zoanette Johnson.

Over the single hour, we only saw six singers for any length of time with five making it through. Forty-four others we do not see also get a golden ticket. Believe it or not, spoilers say one of these six makes it to the final 40. Don't ask if you don't want to know.

Otherwise, our eyes now go west to Hollywood Week. We'll see how the gender separation impacts the competition.

Karl Skinner, Joplin, Missouri, 26, pizza chef ("I Feel Good' James Brown/ original song w/ guitar) - This sweet married dude is definitely not a technically clean singer but he makes it up with passion and personality. "I want to be uncomparable," he said. Randy: "You can be our 'Idol' mascot." Randy thinks he could do a better job than Ryan Seacrest. Everybody likes him.

After the break, "Idol' feeds us a quartet of "singing" fodder to amuse the judges.

Nate Tao, 24, Reston, VA, American sign language teacher (whose parents are deaf) ("For Once In My Life" Stevie Wonder) - He starts a bit slow but hits the higher range well. "I like your charisma. It's clear you have a nice, unique tone for a guy," Nicki said. "You are very unassuming. Look like you're about to do my taxes," Randy said. "It's effortless and beautiful," Randy said.

Haley Hilburn, 27, Vernon, TX,  ventriloquist ("I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" Leann Rimes// "More Than Anyone" Gavin DeGraw) - She does a duet with her puppet Oscar which is cutesy but distracting. Her second tune showed she has some skills though I found her unremarkable. She gets a yes from three of the judges. I can't imagine she'll get very far.

Zoanette Johnson19, Tulsa, OK,  ("The Star-Spangled Banner") - She is all over the place, a basic hot mess. She also forgot the lyrics at one point. This is a rendition that would make you want to move to Canada just to get away from her. But the judges decide to let her sing the entire song. Kill me now.  She is exhausting. Yes, somehow, the Obama lover gets a yes. What the heck were they hearing? Then again, the producers probably will be spending a lot of time with cameras following her around 24/7 in Hollywood just to see what she'll do.

A teary montage of crying contestants.

Then: Anastacia Freeman, 25, Ardmore, OK (“Unbreak My Heart” Toni Braxton)  - Huh? We have only an hour. Why are we wasting time with this woman? Apparently, she was inspired by God to try out after Phillip Phillips won. They "re-enact" the scene. Again, perplexing.

Kayden Stephenson, 16, Tulsa, OK (“I Wish” Stevie Wonder) - With cystic fibrosis, he said he may not live to 35. It stunts his growth, too. His vocals are mediocre, very weak but at least he's more or less in tune. "A baby Michael," Nicki said. "So many children would be inspired by you." Yes, he gets a sympathy ticket through.

Steven Tyler then comes in drag and strips down for Randy.
