The leaders before tonight remained the leaders after tonight. Four favorites from the sudden death round did not disappoint: Kree Harrison, Angie Miller, Amber Holcomb and my favorite, Candice Glover, who earned the pimp spot for a reason.
The real wild card is Zoanette Johnson. Will she get votes? She won't be getting any from me.
So the fifth spot is ultimately up for grabs. Can Janelle Arthur get enough votes? I'd say so. She certainly sang well enough but it might have been too old school. Breanna Steer and Aubrey Cleland weren't bad but kind of blur together. I would count out Tenna Torres (who shouldn't even be there) and Adriana Lotiano (not quite ready for primetime) immediately.
And like the past two weeks, I'm going to skip over most of Mariah's meaningless babblings.
Zoanette Johnson ("What's Love Got To Do With It" Tina Turner ) - It's like Wendy Williams' crazy sister on stage. Or Fantasia's nutty cousin. She, in fact, makes Fantasia seem subtle. She half screams, half sings. Her vocals are all over the place. That last scream woke up the demons in hell. Keith: "You had a particular theatrical way. It works on certain songs. I don't think it worked particularly in that song." Nicki: "You now I love you. I always tell you the truth. That wasn't it... With that song, you have to be on key and stuff." Randy: "That was a mess, babe." Grade: C-minus
Breanna Steer ("Flaws and All" Beyonce) - Ahh... actual vocal control. How refreshing! While this song is fairly inert, she creates a clean, pretty version of it. Original? Not really. She doesn't try to do too much and it works. Keith: "You find the right songs that show who you are as a singer. You've got tremendous control and poise. If you get through, that you find also a song that takes you more into your own place. You can't be the other Beyonce." Nicki: "This was the absolute wrong song for you. I felt you were straining." Randy: "The song choice was cool. It was a safe song choice. There weren't enough moments." Grade: B-plus
[The AJC software went down at this point so I'm going to summarize the next few rather quickly]
Aubrey Cleland ("Big Girls Don't Cry" Fergie) - She does a very clean, pleasant version, missing some notes in the lower register. But she doesn't register "star" to me at all. Grade: B
Janelle Arthur ("If I Can Dream" Elvis Presley ) - With Kree as the favored country singer here, Janelle has her work cut for her to get the votes to make the top five. But she gave it a good ol' college try with a very good version of this Elvis classic. It did feel very old fashioned, though, which Randy spun as a good thing. Grade: B-plus/A-minus
Tenna Torres ("Lost Lyrics' Faith Hill) - I had no idea why she made it this far. She tries way too hard to do too much with her voice and she simply isn't good enough. Halfway through, her vocals go all over the place like a train off the rails. Though she recovers, she is generally not someone I want to listen to. Grade: B-minus
Angie Miller ("Never Gone" Colton Dixon) - She hits it out of the park again behind the piano using a song from last year's seventh place finisher. She's a contender, for sure. But she also reminds me of Miley Cyrus when she's not singing. Kind of cloying. Grade: A/A-minus
Amber Holcomb ("I Believe In You and Me" Whitney Houston) - She's definitely feels young but has a world of potential. She pulls of a very Jessica Sanchez-ish take on this Whitney song. Grade: A-minus/B-plus
Kree Harrison ( "Stronger' Faith Hill) - I generally find Faith Hill ballads to be a big-time snooze. Kree did her best to give this one some life. She does sing from the heart. Lovely tone, all that jazz. No doubt she'll get plenty of votes. Grade: A-minus
Adriana Latonio ("Stand Up For Love" Destiny's Child) - She started a bit slow and picked up some speed but as Keith said, it was probably too little, too late. Nicki: "I think the song was too big for you." She said she needs more life experience. Randy: "It was very safe and very pageantry... a little boring." Grade: B/B-plus
Pimp spot: "Idol" favorite Candice Glover ("Ordinary People" John Legend) - She brims with vim and vigor. A tour de force vocal performance. Just a pro. I even give her points for not hitting a "big" note at the end. She didn't need to. Keith: "I love your blend. You have this old soul but so now, so current." Nicki salutes her. Randy: "That was ridiculous." Grade: A
