Sundance Channel's first drama "Rectify," shot in Griffin, today has been given a second season.
The series, which has aired three of six episodes so far, will air ten more in 2014.
Ray McKinnon, a Georgia native, created the show about Daniel Holden, a man released from Georgia death row on a technicality and is struggling to adjust to life back in the free world.
Sundance is not measured by Nielsen so we have no idea what the show's viewership is on the network. But since Sundance is very much a secondary channel, ratings are likely pretty modest (as in far fewer than 500,000 viewers nationwide).
AMC, a sister station that initially considered "Rectify" for its lineup three or four years ago, tried to help out the show by airing an episode of "Rectify" this past Sunday after "Mad Men" and drew 667,000 viewers. This type of move is not unprecedented. For instance, NBC a few years back aired episodes of sister station USA's "Psych" and "Monk."
"Rectify" airs at 10 p.m. on Mondays on Sundance.
I wrote a couple of lengthy pieces on "Rectify" last month. Here's my blog coverage. And here's a profile of Ray McKinnon.
Most critics liked the series and its thoughtful, indie-film approach to the story, with special praise given to Aiden Young, who plays Holden.
In a press release, here's what the boss has to say:
Sarah Barnett, Sundance Channel President and General Manager: “The response to ‘Rectify’ has been incredible. We feel as though this story has tapped into something truly unique, with both critics and audiences using their platforms to share such strong, personal reactions to this very distinctive TV series. There’s so much drama and character that’s been set up in the first season, it will be electrifying to see where Rectify goes in season two.”
