I attended a Karyn Greer event tonight and am now picking my wife up at the airport so I missed the live results show.
But I am sitting in the cel phone lot at Hartsfield and found out that who I predicted indeed went home: Amber Holcomb.
That girl certainly has skills but she isn't quite the next Whitney Houston yet, as Nicki Minaj overhyped one week.
Her vocal skills are top notch. She just lacks maturity to understand all the songs she sings and emote properly, as mentor Harry Connick Jr. revealed last night. He had her bumbling about trying to interpret "My Funny Valentine."
Ultimately, the final three ladies are a solid bunch. It's hard to ascertain who will win though my Spidey sense tells me Angie Miller may just take it home over Candice Glover in two weeks.
Jimmy Iovine's take:
Angie: "Angie had the opportunity to shut it down. 'Diamonds' wasn't the song she needed to be. The bulk of the song didn't have enough meat in it. [As for 'Someone to Watch Over Me,'], she wasn't great. It wasn't special enough. It wasn't bad enough to send her home.
Amber: "Last night, Amber sounded karaoke. It would have been a great song if she had more time to prepare for it... As for 'My Funny Valentine,' she digs down deep and does something magnificent. Amber crushed it."
Candice: "If I were Bruno Mars, I'd write a song for Candice's album. It wasn't the best she's done so far but she was head and shoulders above the rest."
Kree: "Kree hasn't lived up to her full potential the last two weeks." He said she did two good performances. He'd almost prefer one bad, one great.
Other elements:
- The "Great Gatsby" version of "Crazy For You" felt odd. I focused more on the dancers than the vocals.
- The Ford Fiesta art wrap ad was pleasant, nothing special.
- Season 7 winner David Cook hasn't quite rocketed to massive stardom when his second album didn't do nearly as well as his first, but he has settled into a solid rock/pop performer who can make a decent living. His newest single "Laying Me Low" isn't half bad. We'll see if Hot AC, which has been his sweet spot (like Daughtry) will give him a chance with this song.
- Never really got will.i.am. He's creative but I've seldom enjoyed his music. I think "Bang Bang" fits that role. It's a mashup of hip hop and 1920s swing with tap dancing thrown in for good measure.
- Another promo for "Idol' courtesy of season four's Constantine Maroulis, who has become a regular on Broadway. He's currently doing "Jeckyl & Hyde." Go Constantine!
- Harry Connick Jr. performs his single "Every Man Should Know." Snooze. No runs!
In other "Idol" news:
- Fantasia's album "Side Effects' debuted No. 2 on the Billboard album chart.
- Ratings last night were horrid, down to 11 million and a 2.8 18-49, the worst ever for a Wednesday night show.
- Michael Sleazak of TVline.com offers some great ideas to improve "Idol" season 13. One I liked: give the contestants more time to find and prep songs.
UPDATE:
- Ratings for this episode were nothing to write home about again: early estimates of 11 million viewers and a mere 2.5 18-49 rating, again hitting a series low in that demographic.
