The idea of "Pregnant & Dating"

It may be unconventional but it's happening! I'll give it a try.  39 votes

What is it about the Atlanta 1990s R&B group Xscape and reality TV?

Three of the four original members are "just kickin' it" on reality shows: Kandi Burruss (Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta"), Tameka "Tiny" Cottle (BET's "Tiny & Toya,"VH1's "T.I. & Tiny") and LaTocha Scott (TV One's "R&B Divas"). Ivy Couch replaced Kandi for a hot second and recently did a season of TLC's "The Sisterhood."

Now it's Kiesha Miles' turn in the reality show world.

You may not recognize her name because she joined Xscape as lead singer in 2003, years after the group's peak popularity and long after Burruss had left.

Atlanta native Kiesha is a Grady baby and now a 33-year-old music producer who has worked with acts such as Ciara. She moved to Los Angeles 18 months ago, got knocked up by an unnamed friend (but not someone she wanted to marry) and heard from a friend about a reality show seeking single, pregnant cast members.

Despite some initial trepidation, she jumped aboard.

The show's title is certainly provocative: "Pregnant & Dating," debuting on WE tv Friday night.  She is one of five women cast on the show out of Los Angeles. She did not know the other four until shooting began.

WE shot Kiesha from her third month of pregnancy until her baby was born prematurely in her eighth month.  (Her son is now a healthy one-month-old infant.)

The show was "one of the best experiences I've ever had," Kiesha said. "I have no regrets. It's a nice classy show. The title will hopefully bring people in. They'll fall in love with this."

She said feedback, based on that title, has been mixed on social media: "Some females who are in the same situation are excited. There are some who are very judgmental."

The first episode, which I screened, features several of the women going on blind dates. Kiesha said some of her dates will be featured, a couple of whom were set up by her former manager. She had a hard time admitting her pregnancy to friends and family before she began showing. (She said she didn't really show until her sixth month, which is relatively late.)

Obviously, most folks sign on to a reality show like this for a little cash and notoriety, but she said she was also honestly seeking a man to settle down with after being attracted to commitment phobes. "I spent a lot of time in the Atlanta music scene," she said. She said she hung out with members of VH1's 'Love & Hip Hop Atlanta." ("Lil Scrappy and I did a couple of songs," she said.)

"But once I got pregnant," she said, "everything changed."

Kiesha said not every guy was all that excited when they found out she was pregnant, but it didn't deter everybody.

"I did meet someone special," she teased.

And while single woman who have babies are more common than ever, there's still a social stigma attached to it.

She was reluctant at first to tell her mother about the baby. "She really wants me to get married," Kiesha said, noting that her parents have been married since they were teens.

On the upside, "I think it will be great for single women who had been through this to see that they’re not alone and not the only ones experiencing it."

As for an abortion:"That was never an option."

The pregnancy, she said, was tough but said the production company "took good care of me and made sure I took care of myself. Filming kept me distracted from being nervous about it."

She had connections with members of Xscape before joining the group for a couple of years:  "I grew up with LaTocha and Tamika in the same church. They used to babysit me. They taught me how to dance!"

This show has its downside for anybody hoping to stay in the spotlight given the relative brevity of pregnancy. If there is a season two, the show will have to find five new women to profile.  She can't realistically be there for five seasons a la NeNe Leakes on "The Real Housewives."

Save on back-to-school basics

While total back to school spending is expected to drop slightly this year since there are fewer school age children, there will be a small increase in the amount consumers spend on apparel, according to data from the National Retail Federation.
