Take a food tour of Castleberry Hill

Is it truly a visit to Paschal’s if you don’t have some of its signature fried chicken? LIGAYA FIGUERAS / LFIGUERAS@AJC.COM

Castleberry Hill is set deep in the pocket of Atlanta’s history scene, beginning with its reconstruction after the Civil War, when it was one of the first to rebuild and entice the resettlement of laborers, blacksmiths, and tradespeople. During the Civil Rights Era, Castleberry Hill became the home front for Civil Rights leaders as they gathered to fortify their bodies and spirits with good food and good company.

Today, Castleberry Hill is still home to the movers and shakers of Atlanta. Just northeast from famed HBCU’s Morehouse and Spellman, the storied streets of Castleberry Hill welcome those seeking an inspired arts scene buoyed by refreshing food and drinks.

Whether you’re new to Atlanta, or a long-time resident, Castleberry Hill offers foodies a plethora of not-to-be-missed hot spots.

Paschal’s

People have been coming to Paschal’s in Atlanta since 1947, when James and Robert Paschal opened the first location at 831 West Hunter Street and started serving up filling favorites, like fried chicken, braised short ribs, and smothered pork chops. People came for the food and stayed for the company. Paschal’s Restaurant soon became the meeting place for politicians, entertainers, and civil rights leaders.

Paschal’s food has staying power and is still a Castleberry Hill spot that can’t be missed. Their fried chicken and crispy catfish are still menu favorites. For dessert, Paschal’s doesn’t steer far from the southern classics, and for good reason. One recent diner stated that Paschal’s peach cobbler is “the truth.”

Paschal’s is still in the business of supporting community with student discounts on home cooked meals.
