A movie for $3? Count us in!

This Saturday is the perfect time to treat yourself, your friends or your family to a movie. Sept. 3 is National Cinema Day – meaning you can go see any movie, at any time, in any format for $3 at participating theaters nationwide. Don’t worry, there is more than likely a theater in your area that you’ll be able to snag a $3 ticket from - more than 3,000 theaters with more than 30,000 screens are participating. Theaters include Regal, AMC and nonfranchise theaters.

This is all thanks to the nonprofit group, The Cinema Foundation. “After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman said. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”

The movie industry was one of many that suffered during the pandemic but has seen a significant positive increase recently. Films like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World Dominion,” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” have pushed the domestic summer box office to $3.3 billion in ticket sales as of late this month.

While Cinema Day organizers describe this one-day event as a trial, if theaters see success, National Cinema Day could potentially return in the fall. Prior to each showing, moviegoers will be shown a sizzle reel of upcoming projects from Disney, Sony, Sony Pictures Classics, Amazon Studios, Lionsgate, Paramount, Warner Bros., Universal, A24, United Artists Releasing, Focus Features and Neon.

Other countries have experimented with a similar concept in the past (a day of cheap movie tickets), but this is the first time it’s being done in the U.S. on such a large scale.

So now you need to find out what theaters you can head to right? Well, head over to nationalcinemaday.org, type in your zip code, then head to your nearest theater for a one-day-only experience!
