North of Atlanta in the heart of Forsyth County lies the city of Cumming. With Lake Lanier to its east and Alpharetta to the south, Cumming is a growing city with a lot to do nearby. What was once a small town is slowly growing into a destination all its own.

Founded all the way back in 1833, Cumming got its name from an army general, William Cumming, who served in the War of 1812. Its founding also coincided with the north Georgia gold rush, and settlers rapidly built up a town in the mid-19th century. Sadly, the following century would be a dark period. There were two major incidents of racial tension, including one in the 1920s and a clash between civil rights demonstrators and the KKK on Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday in 1987 that led to the Brotherhood March.

Thankfully, in recent decades, the growth of the metro area northward has meant that Cumming has grown into a vibrant, multi-cultural destination for families. There are lots of unique local restaurants, great schools, and plenty of attractions to see. Whether you’re coming back from the hikes and wineries of north Georgia or looking for something to do in the northern metro area, here’s some great places to visit.
