Stop eating at chain restaurants, Roswell

Few things are more sacred to a Roswell resident than the downtown dining district. However, you won't just find great eats there. Delectable dishes can be found at locally owned establishments all over town.

On the east side of GA 400, diners will find Foundation Social Eatery (1570 Holcomb Bridge Road), a restaurant with a menu as complex and refined as any you'll find at a Midtown hot spot. Chef and owner Mel Toledo offers up a seasonally rotating menu filled with dishes that are upscale but approachable for the casual diner. Meat, pasta, seafood, soups and salad are available to order and the Crisp Spanish Octopus is a must try no matter the season.

When you crave a taste of New Orleans cuisine but can't get to southern Louisiana, head to Adele's on Canton (1169 Canton St.). A relaxed dining experience welcomes guests who can order breakfast, lunch and dinner from a menu that includes po-boys, muffulettas, gumbo, red rice and beans, jambalaya, pralines, beignets and Community Coffee.

For a different take on seafood, make a reservation at Hugo's Oyster Bar (10360 Alpharetta St.). The uniquely decorated restaurant that is fit for a date night has an upscale, yet unpretentious, hometown atmosphere. From crab cakes to tuna tartar to oysters and grouper, the menu is filled with classic seafood dishes for lunch and dinner.

Roswell native Ryan Pernice owns two restaurants on Canton Street that offer patrons a contemporary neighborhood atmosphere but have very different cuisine. At Table & Main (1028 Canton St.) guests will find a Southern-influenced tavern serving up comfortably familiar dishes including their much-heralded fried chicken. Up the street, Osteria Mattone (1095 Canton St.) offers a seasonally rotating menu of Italian dishes inspired by multiple regions of Italy.

For a unique lunch experience, head upstairs at Roswell Provisions where you'll find Le Bistro (953 Canton St.). The quaint eatery serves French-inspired dishes including crepes and quiches. Children are welcome to dine with adults each day until 7 p.m. when the restaurant's atmosphere turns decidedly more adult-friendly. Don't forget to save room for dessert! Le Bistro has an extensive dessert menu that includes French and American classics.

When you're in Roswell you won't want to miss a stop at The Pie Hole (1025 Canton St.). The quaint establishment sells large slices of their beloved small batch handmade pies from a seasonally rotating menu.
