Things to do in and around Atlanta this weekend

You can get your Opa! on this weekend during the 28th annual Marietta Greek Festival.

The popular festival will be held Friday through Sunday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.

Festival goers can feast on dolmades, spanakopita, Greek sausage, pita bread and plenty of feta cheese.

In addition to food, the festival offers authentic Greek entertainment, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities and shopping.

There are also tours of the Byzantine church, which has about 365 families.

WINGS: A SILENT FILM

Fans of the genre of silent film may want to check out the Strand Theatre.

“Wings,” directed by William A. Wellman and the winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture, will be screened on the Marietta Square this weekend.

This classic, released by Paramount Pictures in 1927, two young men — one rich, one middle class — who are in love with the same woman, become fighter pilots in World War I.

It stars Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers, and Richard Arlen. Gary Cooper also has a small role that helped launched his Hollywood career.

All silent films are accompanied live on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ by Strand organist Ron Carter.

The organ was originally purchased by private owners in 1999 for installation in their Columbus, Ohio home. It was built by the Allen Organ Company of Macungie, Penn.
